A 3D design from our design process: gable pavilion with a stained ceiling and fireplace. A 3D design by True Star Outdoor Solutions.

Your backyard, designed around you.

Before anyone picks up a shovel, we sit down with you, learn how you want to live outside, and design it in 3D until it feels right. Then the same accountable team manages the build.

You're trusting us with your home. We take that personally.

A backyard project isn't a product off a shelf. It's where your kids will grow up, where you'll host the holidays, where you'll sit on a quiet Saturday morning. Getting it right starts long before construction, with someone who actually listens.

That's what our design process is for. You get our full attention, every question answered, and a plan you understand completely before you commit to building anything. If you'd like to talk first, call or text (469) 447-5143.

What we bring to every design

Five things we hold ourselves to on every project, whether it's one patio cover or a whole backyard. Every design on this page is a different True Star project.

01

It starts with how you live

We ask about your routine before we talk about materials. Who's out there, when, and for what. Where the sun sits at 6 pm. Where the kids play. Where the grill smoke should go. The design follows your life, not a catalog.

Works well for: Every project. This conversation is where the design actually comes from.

02

Designed for your house, not dropped onto it

Clay soil, drainage, July sun and the occasional freeze are part of every plan. We place shade where you'll actually sit, grade so water leaves the house, and choose plants that will still be alive in August.

Works well for: Yards that have to work in real Texas weather, not just in pictures.

03

You see it before you commit

A 3D design lets you walk through your yard on a screen, from above and at eye level. You see the scale, the materials and the view from the kitchen window, and you change anything you want. No surprises on build day.

Works well for: Anyone who has trouble picturing a project from a sketch, which is almost everyone.

04

The team that designs it manages the build

We don't hand your design off to another contractor. The team that listened to you, drew it and answered your questions stays accountable through construction, coordinating our crews and any licensed specialty trades, so nothing gets lost in between.

Works well for: Peace of mind. One accountable team, start to finish.

How design works

Simple, clearly defined projects can go straight to an estimate. Bigger ones start with design.

The design retainer

Design starts with a $1,000 retainer, applied to your project total when you build with us.

What's included

Measurements, a 3D design of your space, a review meeting where we walk through it together, revisions, and a written scope of work.

Build now or in phases

The design is where you decide what to build first and what can wait, so later phases don't mean tearing out earlier ones.

After the consultation you get a written, itemized number for your project. Financing is available through HFS Financial, and checking your options won't affect your credit. See how financing works.

“When I first met with Cameron, he took his time and expertise and explained the whole process to me from the initial design concepts, to the final touches at the end. And WOW, do I love the results!”

How the design process works

  1. Step 1

    We listen

A complimentary Project Fit Consultation, usually at your house. Your goals, your routine, your budget, and anything the yard or HOA will throw at us.

  2. Step 2

    We measure and design

We measure the property and build the 3D design, usually within about two weeks.

  3. Step 3

    We walk through it together

You see your yard in 3D, ask every question, and change whatever you want. We don't move on until it feels right to you.

  4. Step 4

    We build it

If you move ahead, the same team manages the build and the $1,000 retainer is credited to construction.

Start your design

Tell us a little about your yard and how you'd like to use it. Someone on our Frisco team will call you back, usually within a couple of hours during the workday.

Helpful to include, if you have it:

  • How you'd like to use the yard
  • A few photos of the space, if you have them
  • Ideas or pictures you love

What to ask any designer

Whoever you hire, these questions separate a plan you can build from a pretty picture.

Can I see it in 3D before I approve it?+

A 2D plan or a hand sketch doesn't show you what the space will feel like. If you can't see it before you approve it, you're taking a real risk.

Does the design handle drainage?+

Drainage is the most common afterthought in outdoor design and the most expensive thing to fix after construction. A good design deals with it from the first visit.

Will the plants survive here?+

Plenty of plants that look great in a catalog won't make it through a North Texas summer. Ask for the track record of each plant in your area.

Is the designer connected to the builder?+

When design and construction are separate companies, details get lost in the handoff. Ask who will actually build what's on the page.

Common questions

How much does design cost?
Design starts with a $1,000 retainer, which is applied to your project total when you build with us. It covers measurements, the 3D design, a review meeting and a written scope of work.
How long does the design take?
We typically finish the first design within about two weeks of the consultation, then refine it with you.
Do I need a design for my project?
Not always. Simple, clearly defined projects can go straight to an estimate. Bigger projects, especially ones with a cover, kitchen or several pieces, should start with design.
What kinds of projects do you design?
Patio covers, outdoor kitchens, paver patios, pool areas, planting and lighting, and complete backyards.
Do you also build it?
Yes. We're a design-build firm. The team that designs your project manages the build, coordinating our crews and licensed specialty trades when a job needs them.
Do you work in my area?
We're based in Frisco and design and build across North DFW, including The Colony, Prosper, Plano, McKinney, Allen, Celina, Little Elm, Lewisville, Carrollton and Dallas.
