Patio Covers in DFW
A patio cover is the single most effective way to extend your outdoor living season in DFW. Without real shade, a North Texas patio is unusable from May through September. With a solid roof overhead, that same space becomes a year-round outdoor room that stays dry in the rain. True Star designs and builds custom patio covers sized for your yard, tied into your roofline, and finished to match your home.
True Star coordinates approved design, engineering, permits, footings, framing, roofing, ceilings, fans and lighting through one accountable project team and one point of contact.

Why True Star
A solid roof blocks the afternoon sun and keeps rain off your furniture. We size the cover and its overhang to your yard's exposure so the shade lands where you actually sit.
Stained tongue and groove ceilings, outdoor-rated fans, recessed lighting and TV walls are planned up front so wiring is hidden before the ceiling closes in.
Cedar posts and beams, shingles matched to your existing roof, and a proper tie-in to the house. The goal is a cover that looks like it came with the home.
Our Work

Expertise
The most common patio cover failures we see in DFW come from two sources: undersized post footings and a poor tie-in to the house. Footings that aren't deep enough let posts shift in DFW's expansive clay soil, and a bad roof tie-in is where leaks start. We pour footings to the depth required by local code and flash the tie-in so water goes where it should.
Beam sizing matters as much as looks. An undersized beam sags over time, especially on wider spans. Covers are built from engineered plans, and we don't substitute lighter materials to hit a lower price point.
Roofed structures generally require a building permit in North DFW. True Star runs the city permit and inspections and prepares your HOA packet before construction begins.

How It Works
We visit your property, look at sun exposure and your roofline, and talk through your vision, material preferences, and budget. We identify permit requirements and any HOA considerations upfront.
Structures require an approved design before construction, developed through our paid design process with applicable 3D visualization. True Star coordinates required permits and documents the expected construction schedule.
True Star coordinates footings, framing, roofing, ceilings, fans, lighting and vetted specialty trades required for the scope. You receive updates at key milestones and proactive communication if conditions change.
Buyer's Guide
Patio covers generally need a building permit. An unpermitted cover can cause problems with insurance and when you sell. Confirm who is pulling the permit before work begins.
Clay soil in North Texas moves with moisture. Footings that aren't deep enough will allow posts to shift and the roof to crack at the tie-in. We pour footings to code depth for DFW conditions, not just enough to look stable on day one.
Indoor ceiling fans and light fixtures are not rated for outdoor humidity and temperature swings. They fail quickly and create electrical hazards. Every fan and fixture we install is rated for outdoor wet or damp locations.

Client Reviews
"I am extremely pleased with the travertine patio extension, complete with brick wall exterior, tongue & grooved stained pine interior with TV, fireplace, mantle and roof extension too! They also provided chop stone borders for three flower beds. The crews arrived daily on time, cleaned up at the end of each day and were easy to work with. Cameron and Eric stayed on top of day-to-day details and were excellent about communicating approvals and updates. I would use TrueStar again in the future!"

Common Questions
Answers to the questions we hear most from homeowners in Frisco, Plano, Allen, McKinney, and the surrounding DFW area.
Based on our completed projects, a covered patio (cover only) starts around $10,600. Shingle-matched covers tied into the house with finished ceilings, fans and lighting typically run $20,000 and up. Size, roof tie-in, ceiling finish, electrical and permit requirements drive the price. True Star provides a detailed, itemized estimate after your complimentary Project Fit Consultation.
Roofed structures such as patio covers generally require a building permit in North DFW cities, and many neighborhoods also require HOA approval. True Star runs the city permit process and inspections, and prepares your HOA submittal packet.
Most patio cover builds take 1 to 3 weeks of construction once the permit is approved. Covers with stone columns, fireplaces or extensive electrical can run longer. Before construction, we provide the expected schedule and communicate proactively when conditions affect timing.
Yes. Most of the covers we build are tied into the house with shingles matched to the existing roof, so the cover looks like it was part of the original home. We also build freestanding covers where the yard or roofline calls for it.
Yes. Ceiling fans, recessed lighting, outlets, TV walls and fireplaces are planned during design so the electrical rough-in is handled before the ceiling is closed in. Every fan and fixture we install is rated for outdoor use.
